Clemson safety to forgo senior season

Clemson safety Van Smith announced he will forego his senior season on social media, and it was confirmed by a Clemson University spokesman on Sunday afternoon.

"I just want to say thank you to Clemson University and community for all the support," Smith said in a tweet, "It has been a great three-year journey. The Day I committed Sept 1, 2015, I knew Clemson was the place that would help me grow into a man and not just a football player. Thanks to all the coaches that kept me going through my ups and downs. Again, I just want to say thank you to the coaches, Clemson Football, and the whole Clemson community."

The Charlotte native logged 49 tackles (1.5 for loss) with a pass breakup and an interception as a junior, starting 13 of 14 games.

Over the previous two seasons, including a second-team All-ACC campaign as a sophomore, Smith posted 130 tackles and three interceptions in 1,004 snaps over 29 games.

"I just want to say thank you to the coaches, Clemson Football and the whole Clemson community." Excited for the next step for Van Smith as we announce that he will be entering the 2018 @NFL Draft.
