by -

Clemson has opened the Clemson Applied Science Lab (CASL) at the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex. Director of Applied Science Alex Bina guided a tour (below) and answered questions about the new 2,400-square-foot area, which includes both a science lab and recovery center.

The science lab features:

- Two Sparta Science force plates to judge force efficiency

- A DARI motion capture lab to quantify functional movement

- A Trazer augmented reality station to measure change of direction

- Two NordBords to gauge hamstring strength

- A Senaptec sensory station to quantify cognitive performance, decision making and visual acuity

The recovery center features:

- A sensory deprivation pod, which houses 1,200 pounds of epsom salt dissolved in water at skin temperature to remove athletes from light, sound and some gravitational force

- Two infrared hyperthermic cocoon pods which provide athletes with far-infrared heat therapy and vibrational massage

- Four Human Touch massage chairs

- Dedicated tables and space for Normatec compressive sleeves for use in addition to the Normatec air pressure massage systems provided to each player prior to the season

CASL will also serve as the new base of operations for existing applied science programs, including but not limited to:

- The Catapult GPS system, which evaluates the demand places on athletes during practices and games

- The Rise Science sleep performance and stress analysis system to effectively measure athletes’ rest and recovery
