The fun is just beginning for instate signal caller

by - Senior Writer -

The fun is just beginning for 4-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner.

The North Charleston (SC) Fort Dorchester 2018 standout is having the kind of season most quarterbacks can only dream of, and he’s drawing interest from schools around the country.

Life couldn’t’ be better.

“It's gotten really fun actually, and I'm blessed - just having the opportunity to play football. With me coming off the surgery this past off season, I told myself, when I get healthy I'm gonna ball and play to my full extent.,” Joyner told TigerNet recently. “I want to make sure that I take advantage of it and that's what I'm doing. My team has helped me, and they're pushing me real hard to allow me to play ball like this. Everything is just going great.

“Honestly, it's gotten pretty crazy. It's gotten to a point that I didn't expect it to so quick, but it has been pretty busy.”

Joyner has offers from Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Tennessee and South Carolina but is beginning to draw interest from as far away as Oregon.

“One day my coach is like, 'Oregon keeps sending you stuff. Oregon, UCLA and USC.' And from up north, I got a letter from Notre Dame as well,” he said. “The only school that I have talked to is Notre Dame. Oregon is constantly sending me stuff, so I don't know if they want to get in contact with me and they can't, but they send me stuff constantly.”

Would he want to play on the West Coast?

“Yeah, but no. I really don't know,” he said. “It would be great to play for Oregon with the uniforms and the swag. I love that.”

Last month, Joyner put on a show in front of Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter, throwing for 305 yards and four touchdowns.

“Everything went well. I played pretty solid, but I didn't have my best game,” Joyner said. “I still threw for 305, but all around, I played okay.”

Joyner insists he wants to play quarterback at the next level, and both South Carolina and NC State have told him they would use him as a signal caller.

That hasn’t the case for the Tigers, who tell him he will have an opportunity at quarterback but needs to be open to playing another position.

“They’ve kind of been pushing, like 'You still can have an opportunity to play quarterback, but in case that doesn't work out, you have to be ready to go to another position.' And, I understand that,” he said. “Like I said, all my schools are really solid right now, but South Carolina, they recruit me as hard as they can. They are one of the schools that are contacting me as well.”

Joyner is good friends with former teammate and current Clemson offensive lineman John Simpson, but Simpson isn’t pushing for him to be a Tiger.

“He's not all about persuading me about coming to Clemson, which I would think he would do that, but he just wants the best for me,” he said. “I'm not surprised. That’s just the kind of guy he is. And I’m glad he was able to play this season because I told him he was going to play.”

Joyner insists Clemson is still at the top of his list, but he wants to make sure he gets through this season before concentrating on creating a top three or top five.

“I'm at a point to where I've put it on the backburner, only because I'm trying to win a state championship this year,” he said. “I don't want to put that in front of that. I don't want to be selfish. As soon as the season ends, I'm going to crack down on my recruiting. My top five, top three schools and just cut it down quick.”
