“It went pretty well. The highlight was getting coached up by Coach Caldwell,” Simpson told TigerNet. “I got to see the way he is with the players and the experience he has in the game. He knows a lot about techniques and things like that. It was good to get that coaching.”

Simpson also got to spend a good deal of time with Clemson assistant and former tight end Durrell Barry, another product out of Fort Dorchester.

“I spent a lot of time with him. You know he graduated from my high school and he knows my head coach,” Simpson said. “We usually ending up talking about home. He tries to tell me how good he was in high school and I try to tell him he wasn't that good.”

“I was around, but I didn't hear when they actually offered him,” Simpson said. “Someone was talking to me and I didn't get to see it. I know when I was a freshman no one was really looking at me except for Clemson and South Carolina, and even then I don't think they thought about offering. It was kind of amazing that he has the talent to do that at such a young age.”

Simpson (6-5, 303) has had Clemson as his leader since a visit last fall, and a recent trip to Alabama put the Crimson Tide in second place ahead of South Carolina.

The Gamecocks will get their chance at Simpson today when he attends Steve Spurrier’s camp, but he won’t attend Saturday’s Gamecock Showcase Camp. Simpson said he also plans visits to LSU, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida this summer before a return trip to Clemson for the All-In Cookout in late July with his family.

Simpson said this weekend’s visit further solidified what he already knows about Clemson.

“It’s about family up there,” he said. “They don’t tell you what you want to hear. They tell you like it is, just like your own family would do.”
