Four-star commit says Clemson program is "headed upwards"

LeAnthony Williams, Jr., made a public splash Monday afternoon, committing to Clemson via a YouTube video that showed the passion behind the player. Now that the recruiting process is over, he says he’s ready to get to work.

The 4-star cornerback out of Roswell (GA) picked Clemson over Georgia, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Florida. Other offers included Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Michigan. Williams is rated as the No. 87 player overall nationally by Rivals and is listed as No. 186 in the ESPN300. He visited Clemson’s campus for the Tigers’ first Junior Day earlier this year and came away from that visit knowing Clemson was the place he wanted to be.

“When I started to narrow down the schools and figure out who was giving me the most attention and all that, that's when I came down to Clemson,” Williams told TigerNet. “Clemson was the place I wanted to be. It definitely felt like home.”

Williams said he wanted to play to play for a school that would give him a chance to play for a national championship.

“I think the program is headed upwards, and I can't wait to get down there and play for a national championship,” he said. “I just talked it over with my dad, and we finally came to a decision that Clemson was the place.”

Helping Clemson’s cause is the relationship Williams has with secondary coach Mike Reed and former teammate Tre Lamar, a 5-star linebacker who enrolled at Clemson in January.

“It was just Coach Reed and the coaching staff,” Williams said. “Coach Swinney is just always there, and they showed me a lot of attention. I'm excited to play for Coach Reed. He's a player's coach, and he knows how to put a player where he's comfortable. I wanted to play for Coach Swinney, because of what I heard from Tre and other people.”

Williams, who is the first of what could be three corners taken in 2017, is the eighth commitment for the 2017 recruiting cycle. Seven of those commits have a 4-star rating by ESPN as he joins quarterback Hunter Johnson of Brownsburg (IN), offensive lineman Matt Bockhorst of Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier, quarterback Chase Brice of Loganville (GA) Grayson, wide receiver Amari Rodgers of Knoxville (TN) Catholic, offensive lineman Noah DeHond of Hightstown (NJ) and offensive lineman Blake Vinson of Citra (FL). The Tigers also have 3-star safety Baylon Spector of Calhoun (GA) as a verbal for the class.
