Hunter Johnson decides on his new school

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson sophomore quarterback Hunter Johnson had decided on his next school.

The former 5-star quarterback will transfer to Northwestern announced by the school. His brother Cole played quarterback for the Wildcats from 2013-2016 and was a big factor in his recruitment.

Johnson will have to sit out a year and will be eligible to play three more years starting in 2019.

"I'm thrilled to be a part of the Wildcat family," Johnson said in the release. "The program that Coach Fitzgerald and his staff have built at Northwestern is phenomenal, and one my family has had the opportunity to get to know and trust. I am thankful to Coach Swinney and the Clemson family for all their support over the past year-and-a-half. My focus now is on doing everything in my power to help this team prepare to compete for a Big Ten West title. Go 'Cats!"

His coach Pat Fitzgerald is excited to have the signal-caller in the fold at his University.

"We are ecstatic to add a player of Hunter's caliber and character to our program," Fitzgerald said. "He comes from an outstanding family, one we've had the opportunity to know for many years, and he will fit right in to the culture we continue to build here in Evanston. I'm excited for the opportunity to be his coach and look forward to him joining our football family on campus this month."

The signal-caller completed 8-for-14 passes for 85 yards with a touchdown and an interception during Clemson's 2018 Spring Game. Last season, he went 21-of-27 passing for 234 yards in 76 snaps over seven games.

Coming out of high school, he was the top quarterback in the nation by ESPN, No. 2 quarterback in the nation according to 247Sports, Elite 11 quarterback, and MVP of the US Army All-American game.

Johnson wanted to thank Dabo Swinney and Clemson nation in a school release back in May.

"I want to thank Coach Swinney and the Clemson family for giving me the opportunity to be a part of something special,” said Johnson. “I’ve met some amazing people who I will forever call family. I am a better man and a better football player because of my time spent at Clemson. Go Tigers!"
