Anyone else think the system is a little weird. Like you can be ranked in the 300's and still be a 4-star. I guess that's just due to the volume of kids playing? The range of a four star and a three star is huge.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is how 247 looks at it...

Mar 1, 2021, 4:03 PM

Players are first grouped qualitatively with a star rating, then given a numerical rating based on their future potential, and finally ranked according to these numerical ratings.

110 - 101 = Franchise Player. One of the best players to come along in years, if not decades. Odds of having a player in this category every year is slim. This prospect has “can’t miss” talent.

100 - 98 = Five-star prospect. One of the top 30 players in the nation. This player has excellent pro-potential and should emerge as one of the best in the country before the end of his career. There will be 32 prospects ranked in this range in every football class to mirror the first round of the NFL Draft.

97 - 90 = Four-star prospect. One of the top 300 players in the nation. This prospect will be an impact-player for his college team. He is an All-American candidate who is projected to play professionally.

89 - 80 = Three-star prospect. One of the top 10% players in the nation. This player will develop into a reliable starter for his college team and is among the best players in his region of the country. Many three-stars have significant pro potential.

79 - below = Two-star prospect. This player makes up the bulk of Division I rosters. He may have little pro-potential, but is likely to become a role player for his respective school.

Interesting stats about roster:

8 of the 10 highest rated offensive line recruits came from the last two recruiting classes.
The 4 highest rated DT recruits came from the last two classes.
The 5 highest rated LB recruits came from the last two classes.
The 2 highest rated safety recruits came from the last two classes.

I really love that trend.

We haven't had a supremely dominant OL since the early 90s. Now don't get me wrong, we've had great/good OLs but nothing dominant.

"range" within the star rankings. For ex, a low 4-star can be just a hair above a 3-star, and a high 4-star can be just a tad below a 5-star. But the difference between a 3 and 5 seems huge. LOL

Fire Skalski! Lowly 3 star!

Glad our coaches recognized the athletic and leadership potential in Skalski. Another success in player development. All in.

Re: Great Stuff!

Mar 1, 2021, 10:41 PM [ in reply to Great Stuff! ]

Yeah it is and probably explains why our TE's haven't been utilized in the past several years. It also shows the trend on how we missed in the 17-19 classes for various reasons. Be it transfer, injuries, a couple quit FB all together. Certainly had an impact, especially since we won the natty in 16 and had been successful.

It also shows how well we developed talent in the 13-15 classes. Marion Hobby could spot and develop talent. Just saying... Think you have to look at both in parallel. Same with Jeff Scott.

That 2018 defensive line class had so much potential. Belk left the program. Jeffries hasn’t been a factor. Mascoll has been decent. KJ Henry and XT have not lived up to the hype yet. Perhaps this is the year one of them takes that leap. We have three 5 star DEs, two in year 4 and one in year 2. That position has the talent to generate a consistent pass rush, we just have to see it finally happen.

XT, KJ, Mascoll, and Murphy. The two deep at that position is insanely talented. They can really make the difference in us winning a national title or not.

DT is talented, but lacks experience. Our DEs have to be exceptional this year. I’m optimistic, but, we’ll see.

Thanks for compiling. It's also crazy that Skalski and Turner are the main two defensive leaders and were ranked the lowest coming out of high school at their respective positions. Maybe the best is yet to come at those two positions?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Roster breakdown

Mar 5, 2021, 9:17 AM

The talent level is only going to keep getting better.

We lose Skalski and Spector at LB, but are likely to replace them with Jalon Walker and, hopefully IMO, Daniel Martin. We'd be replacing two former 3 star recruits with 2 four star, top 100 recruits.

Same thing at safety. We are losing Nolan, but will be replacing him with a four star, or five star recruit. Malaki Starks or Keon Sabb, hopefully.

Same thing at offensive line. We are signing almost exclusively four star offensive lineman now. Three of our five oldest offensive lineman were three and two stars (McFadden, Rayburn, and Trotter). It's looking like we'll be replacing them with four star guys.

Hopefully this trend continues at TE. We replaced a three star in JC Chalk with the #1 TE recruit in the nation. We are going after the top 3 TEs for this class, and hopefully we sign one of them. I think Tony can go along way in helping with that.

Three of our four oldest DTs were three stars as well (Darnell, Ruke, and Etinosa). It looks like we'll be landing 5 star Travis Shaw and possibly another 4 star guy as well. Replacing former 3 star recruits with 4 and 5 stars.

The depth on this team is going to continue getting better. The best is yet to come.

Mar 5, 2021, 9:43 AM

DE must be the absolute hardest position to rate. We have XT, Murphy, and KJ Henry as VERY highly rated at their position coming in. You would expect anyone with that high a rating to be an immediate star. Murphy has already shown a lot in his freshman year. XT was sitting behind superior talent, but in the subsequent time, counting medical problems or whatever, he seems to actually have regressed. Henry never really has lived up to that ranking. He just was not ready to play, be it physically or mentally, not sure. But he still has time to reverse that.

We only have one guy on the whole roster who had a 1 next to his ranking. Bresee lived up to the billing, causing all sorts of problems from his DT position from the first game on. He is going to be truly fearsome by the time he leaves here. :)

Mar 5, 2021, 10:23 AM

XT showed so much promise his freshman year. I believe that the scheme in 2019 really limited his abilities, with heavy emphasis on our back seven. Last year he was hampered by COVID. I still believe that XT can be great. I hope it happens this year.

KJ will probably never live up to the hype. But, I still think he can be good enough to be on an NFL roster. Same with Mascoll.

Murphy will probably be a top 10 pick.

Re: My only take on the list is surprise, and a realization that

Mar 6, 2021, 10:09 AM

True dat. Still think Hobby made a difference. Be nice to get him back, if he would. Even as a consultant.

Although, as you say, our talent level is and will continue to get better. It was interesting to see the comparisons between us in relation to Bama, OSU, uga, and Oklahoma. I even looked at Oregon, which is impressive as well, although a further inspection, you'll find they put most of their eggs in the offense development... Much like OKC.

Point being, we'll match each with offense prod in the next few years, but we must beat them on defense. As you laid out, that talent is rising too. And with CBV, it doesn't take much.
