Listening to basketball game last night

Mar 4, 2021, 10:07 AM

I kept hearing that the Tigers were taking and missing deep three point shots.
The Syracuse zone did exactly what they wanted to do. To push the three point shots back even if just a foot or two, to get the Clemson shooters off their spot.
There has to be some movement by the players with the ball to get the zone out of it’s shape and create shots. The penetration doesn’t always need to come from the top of the zone. There must be baseline cutters and wing players that can get some penetration to create open shots.
There is just too much standing around waiting on the ball to come to them and throwing up wild three point shots. There is more to basketball than playing defense and shooting 3’s

ball movement will defeat the zone like our first game with them. three guys at top of key and 8 feet apart lobbing it back and forth playing catch does nothing. we never tested them on their zone. We settled for long jump shots most of the time. You would have though the zone was a new thing they way we tip toed around it last night.

Both teams too 29+ from behind the arc.... they actually took 3 more 3pt than we did.

But that wasn't the issue. We were 10-30 inside the arc and worse, only took 6 FT. They did just slightly better and the differ4ence came from the line. Cuse played a bit clear game. Ehhh, road games.

Why did Syracuse get to the line so much more than we did?***

Shrug, style of play, particularly inside-out.

Even when we boatraced them in littlejohn, they took nearly a 2:1 FT advantage there too.

Cuse is top 4 for FT attempts. We are bottom 3. That is fine, we are #3 in FT% ... Cuse is no #2. The Zone is actually decent at minimizing fouls for opposing teams. Not only that, but Cuse is top 2 in conference for both steals and blocks ... and forcing turnovers.

Our guys played a decent game but the shots were not falling. Cuse got the spurt post-halftime and that was that. A road game with a cool night. Only Dawes/Hunter was better than 30% and you have to have a few folks actually hitting shots. If Trapp or Simms didn't go 4-16 as well... meh, we have a team scoring push and normally don't have nor need someone to carry. Off night.

lack luster O and minimal D. I wouldn't call it playing good at all. we came out with no zip especially at the start of each half. that part of the second half buried us. seldom were willing to work for a good shot. And where were Newman and honor?

Coming out of the 2nd they were literally just catch/shoot from the arc. No movement just walked it back up the court and took a shot in the first 8-10 seconds. If you make those, there is nothing you can do defensively. It wasn't like our D did get set or folks out of gas/position.

We were literally trading layups for 3s at that time.

Honor was 0-3,. Newman was 1-4. BB was playing the guys that were at least hitting something.

And I don't get the "play honor all the time" crowd.I love him but when he has an off night, rest him! He can take over a game but he can also disappear. You can normally tell quickly if he has the touch. VT: he was 0-3, L to FSU 0-5, UVA 3-7, Duke 1-9. He does not warm up if having an off night.

There is a difference between having a bad game and playing poorly. Playing poorly betrays you even when you are having a good shooting night, etc.

Honor is only 5'10". Dawes is listed at 6'2", but

he's not very big either. Against taller perimeter players they can struggle.

Your debate style and excuse-mongering reminds me of someone.

Can't quite put my mitts on it yet tho..

We gotta win a game like this with the team we have, 11 years in, if we want to not be one-and-done in the tournament.

Ball movement and dribble penetration...

Mar 4, 2021, 11:20 AM

will beat an aggressive zone defense. Playing old school Dean Smith "four corners" offensive approach tossing the ball around the perimeter until there is only about 5 seconds left on the shot clock and the team end-up forcing shots ain't gonna get it done.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Re: Ball movement and dribble penetration...

literally playing catch passing. it did nothing to make them work on D. then when wee would move we'd many times throw it way or throw it where they couldn't do anything with it. Considering what was at stake we did not seem dialed in. To be blunt the 10 minute to go desperation is annoying. They should have brought that the whole game.

Someone mentioned CU ranks 207th in 3pt percentage and averages 43.6% shooting 3s per game. 49% of the shots last night were 3s. Thus far this season, players taking 60% of the 3pt attempts are averaging 21.4%. This approach may work ok for home games, but not so effective come tournament time.

None of our guards are good enough (height/speed/passing ability/whatever) to penetrate against a zone.

The few times we tried we turned it over.

We had the Clemson special multiple 5 minute scoring droughts.

We got nothing from turnoevers or the FT line.

Without being able to hit jump shots, that equals an L.

The defense was solid and the effort was there.
