Reports: Clemson basketball staffer hired as Eastern Illinois coach

Clemson basketball special assistant Marty Simmons is set to take over as head coach of Eastern Illinois, per multiple reports. Simmons was the head coach at Evansville until 2018 before before being let go and Brad Brownell bringing him on his staff for a new position. Never did understand this hire by Brownell other than they were friends and Simmons got fired with less than a stellar record. Watched him on the bench during games and he did very little except sit there. Probably a fine person but a strange hire by us for a made-up position. Wish him well.

He has a ton of work to do. At least 2 coaches and needs to recruit 4-6 players. I'm sure several will be transfer portal players but hopefully can find a diamond in rough HS recruit that hasn't committed anywhere yet.

Was he more like a Woody McCorvey kind of hire - rules restrict coaching. Replace assistant coach with high energy, love kids, proven successes working with present day 18-22 year olds and give him the authority to do his job. Yes nice proven player skills -help Brownell understand it’s not how much you know, but how much the kids know you care about them. You want them to be successful and to play at next level. Hire Terrence O as special assistant and listen to him.

The program. Did they all put feelers out to find a way out. Is it me or does it seem that the program is going the wrong direction very quickly.

Let’s see how Brad rebounds from all these challenges!
