I am fine with keeping Brownell on board

Mar 26, 2021, 12:16 AM

but I believe it is more a factor of motivation than ability right now. He knows he can make a cool 1.8 million while Clemson pretends to have a Basketball Program. I think with a little tinkering and restructuring of his compensation package, we can create a more equitable situation.

An incentive-based approach may be the way to go here.

Base Salary $0.00

$25k for nonconference, mid-major win
$50k for any out of conference win
$200k for top 25 out of conference win
$200k for ACC road Win
$100 for ACC Home WIn
$250k Ranked ACC win
$10k every week in the top 25.
100k for first-round tourney win
200k for 2nd round tourney win
300k for elite 8 appearance
500k for final 4
1 million to make the final game
2 million for the national title.

-$500k for nonconference mid-major loss
-$200k for out of conference loss
-$250k For ACC Loss
-$10k for every week not in the top 25.
-500k for first-round tourney loss.

At the end of the year, we add it all up and figure out who owes who, then go from there. I think this is win-win.

Intersting idea.

How much would Coach Brownell have earned / owed this past season had this contract been in place?

;)

Great idea Balm. It’s a good thing for him that we didn’t start him out like this.

We already have enough people on food stamps as it is.

IMO, The problem isn't money, it's recruiting .Since Brad took over in 2010,Clemson has signed some good "athletic" talent ,but is it "basket" talent? I say the answer is "NO".
Case in point; Milton Jennings was the last "ALL-AMERICAN" type basketball player( signed in 2009), but he is now playing in some European League. On the other hand, Zion Williams, who was snatched away by Duke ,played 1 season ,is now in the NBA
You would think that somewhere out there, there has to be some good basketball talent and not just athletic talent that can run up and down the court ,play some defense ,and avoid those dreaded 3 -5 minute scoring droughts Clemson seems to find themselves in game in /game out.
A secondary problem may lie in latching on to a good assistant "offensive" minded assistant coach who can diagram plays for certain situations.
Just saying.
