Clemson shortstop projected to go in first round Monday

Clemson All-ACC shortstop and graduate Logan Davidson is expected to go in the MLB Draft's first round tonight (7 p.m./MLB Network).

Two of the latest projections have the switch-hitting prospect going to the Chicago Cubs at pick No. 27.

"Given their drafted history under Theo Epstein, a college bat is likely here, and Davidson is the best available as a sure-handed shortstop with power potential," CBS Sports' Mike Axisa wrote. CBS Sports has had Davidson projected as high as No. 18 to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"Most of Chicago's recent first-round success has come with college bats, and the strength of this Draft could dictate another trip down that road with the same candidates we have mentioned throughout the 20s," MLB.com analyzed.

He is rated No. 25 on FanGraphs' MLB draft prospects big board.

Davidson picked up second-team All-ACC honors this season.

He led the Tigers with 35 extra-base hits, including top numbers in doubles (18) and triples (2) and ranking second in home runs (15) and RBIs (55). Davidson also led the Tigers in walks (45) and on-base percentage (.412; min. 25 at-bats).

Clemson signees to watch in the early rounds could include shortstop Nasim Nunez (Collins Hill HS in Ga.; 51 in MLB.com top-200), catcher Jonathan French (Parkview Hs. in Ga.; 124) and right-handed pitcher Gavin Collyer (Mountain View HS in Ga.; 125).
