NOTRE DAME, IND. - Senior righthander Clate Schmidt tied his career-long outing to lead No. 18 Clemson to an 11-1 victory over Notre Dame at Frank Eck Stadium on Friday night. The Tigers, who took a 2-0 lead in the series, improved to 37-18 overall and 15-14 in the ACC. The Fighting Irish dropped to 27-26 overall and 11-16 in ACC play.

Schmidt (7-4), who retired the first 16 batters he faced, earned the win by allowing just three hits, one run and no walks with six strikeouts in 8.1 innings pitched (95 pitches). Notre Dame starter Michael Hearne (8-2) suffered the loss, as he gave up three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

In the first inning, Chase Pinder led off with a single and Eli White lined a double. Seth Beer and Chris Okey followed with back-to-back RBI groundouts. Okey lined a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning, then Notre Dame responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. But Clemson scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Reed Rohlman’s two-out, two-run single. Pinder added a run-scoring double and White laced a run-scoring triple in the Tigers’ three-run eighth inning, then Rohlman ripped a run-scoring double and Mike Triller lined a run-scoring single in the ninth inning.

The series concludes Saturday at 1:05 p.m., on ESPN3.
