Youth

Mar 14, 2021, 2:18 PM

Said this yesterday. The youth excuse only goes so far. UNC lineup today includes 4 freshman, 3 sophmores, 1 junior and 1 senior. Yesterday if not mistaken it was 5 freshmen, 2 sophmores, 1 junior and 1 senior. Youth may be a problem for us but ain't for them.

It’s not like they beat the socks off of us. They beat us by 1 run: We have loss four one run games this year. The team last year didn’t lose at all in a one run game. We were 14-3 before they canceled the season. I think you can blame close games on youth. A little bit of coaching too, but they go hand in hand.

One thing I’ve noticed from coaching travel ball the last few years is that kids nowadays don’t watch MLB on TV. Most of them, like my son, watch the highlights during the regular season but that’s about it. We hear the kids talking about exit velo, launch angle, and all of the other meaningless stuff they hear and see on YouTube. The mental and situational aspects of the youth game are lacking and us coaches are doing our best to teach them however there just seems to be too many distractions and lack of focus.
