Mickey,

How many current Gamecock players would start for Clemson?

Dan

Dan,

South Carolina fans want to say Samuels or Edwards at wide receiver, but I doubt Clemson would trade Higgins, Rodgers, Renfrow, Overton, Ross or Kendrick for them. I would listen to the Zack Bailey argument at right guard. I would also consider Charlton at punter, but that’s just about it in my opinion.

Greetings Mickey, hope you and your family are doing well! Clemson has been on a roll of late, and I am always happy to see the rest of the team get a chance to play in those type of games.

On the last touchdown for Louisville, I believe by their QB, I happened to notice that Clemson's linebacker, Shaq Smith, had the angle on the QB at the sideline, but at the last moment, he stopped pursuing him. Needless to say, I was astonished that he just gave up on the play, the QB then turned it upfield and scored.

I'm curious if you saw the play. I know Shaq Smith came out of high school a 5-star, and he has had some growing pains. What is your assessment of why Shaq is not further along than where he is now; and is his effort and not taking advantage of his opportunities a part of the reason why he is not a starter?

Thanks,

KO Tiger

KO Tiger,

I saw the play and didn’t understand it either. As far as his development, this is not a major surprise. Three years ago Paul Strelow of tigerillustrated.com suggested Smith might take time to develop. Smith played defensive end in high school and transitioning to linebacker isn’t always easy for everyone. Some of it is instincts that can’t be taught. With that said, I thought he had the best game of his career Saturday against Duke. He is getting better. Venables has developed a lot of players and Smith still has two more years to continue to get better. I think you will see continued improvement here. As Dabo and Venables have said, not all five stars are the same. Not all five stars are ready right away.

Mickey,

Please help with a debate we have at work. Will this be the fewest number of Gamecock fans to ever be in Death Valley for the rivalry game? Why would they want to sit and watch what will happen Saturday night? Thanks and Go Tigers!

Gaines

Gaines,

I have been to every Clemson-South Carolina game since 1974, and I would expect fewer this year than any year I have seen. I cannot speak for the few that came before 1974. There does seem to be a sense of hopelessness in their fan base for this game. There were not that many in 2016 either.
