Good morning Mickey, give me your initial thoughts on the Sugar bowl and whats your prediction. Also, has the staff abandon the pistol formation. I would like to see then run it against Bama in the Sugar bowl in the hurry-up spread attack.

Wendell

Wendell,

I have just started looking at Alabama games, but I can tell you that they are not as deep and talented this year. However, Clemson is not as deep and talented this year either. Bama has a great group of running backs, but their QB has had issues throwing the ball downfield. Their defense is great, but lacks a dominant pass rush. Alabama is very good and favored in the game for a reason. I still think Clemson wins a fairly low scoring game something like 24-21.

I love the pistol formation and wish we would see more of it. I also think both offenses will try to go more up-tempo than we have seen in the regular season.

Mickey,

I always looked forward to your blogs and the expert analysis through the site.

The 'playoff watch' article today compared a lot of stats between the playoff teams.

The Scoring Defense stat has interested me throughout the season as many of the points scored against us have been scored in the fourth quarter in 'garbage' time. In fact, the stat would be at least a third lower if these points had not been given up. My question: do the other four teams play their scrubs significantly late in the game, and how would this stat compare if garbage time points were deducted from each?

Thanks.

Flip

Flip,

Other defenses do put in second and third-teamers late in blowouts, but I think Clemson plays more of their guys earlier than most programs. I will go back and look a the number of snaps of the reserves next week, but I am anticipating Clemson with higher numbers.
