Email Bag
Several readers have asked for more email bag days, so I have decided to publish them at least a couple of days a week. In this format we will publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions, please email me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com. Hi Mickey, I am very excited about the email bags. It is one of my favorite things you do, and I enjoy seeing your opinions and hearing what you think about so many different topics. A lot of fans seem to be focusing on what happened in the Sugar Bowl. It was incredibly disappointing how the offense played, for sure, and the blame cannot be placed on one single unit, much less one single player. That being said, the mentality of this program is all about what is in front, and I think we have an exciting future ahead for the program. My main question is, what do you think the coaching staff and players can learn most from this season? Every year, I think the staff has done a fantastic job of learning from years past, and honestly that can be traced all the way back to when Dabo took over. While those learning points are not always explicit to us as fans, it is clear that the staff is learning and growing each year. So, what do you think are the main takeaways for this staff? Is it regarding how to handle the new early signing period with practices and school? Is it how to manage inexperience coupled with mountain-top expectations? Is it something else that you see as a key point to take into 2018? Thanks for your insight, and Go Tigers! 2012 Tiger 2012 Tiger, The football staff at Clemson is perhaps the best in the country, and part of the reason is they are always looking to learn. I think they are always evolving and never stand still. I can’t speak for the staff, but this year I learned the importance of having vertical threats in the passing game. Its hard to move the ball with the numbers stacked against you. I also learned how difficult it is to win it all. In 1981 I was a young kid but thought this national title thing would happen often. Making the playoffs is tough, but Clemson has done that three years in a row. However, winning in the semi-finals and finals is extremely difficult. You have to have a great staff, special players, and a little luck. You asked a great question, but I think the staff could better answer that question. Unfortunately, I don’t think they would tell us the answer. Lol. Mickey, Thank you for blog, as a ‘90 Alum and fan since the early 70’s its enjoyable to read. I have a question that is not specific to Clemson but rather the conference. Why is it that the SEC can publish their 2018 football schedule on Sept 20, 2017, while it’s January of 2018 and the ACC hasn’t published one yet? Last year it was released Jan 24. Why does it take the ACC 4 additional months to produce a schedule? I’m baffled….. Thank you, Will Will, Thank you for the kind words. I have asked your question 100 times. It is ridiculous they wait this long. If the ACC wants to get serious about football, this would be a good place to start. Also, can I request no more stinking Friday night football garbage? Mickey, I heard Monte Lee on your radio station today and got excited about the baseball season. What are reasonable expectations for Coach Lee’s third season? Thanks and see ya at Beautiful Tiger Field! Patrick Patrick, I have big expectations for this team. They should field one of the best offenses in college baseball. Davidson, Beer, Williams, and Hawkins make the middle of the lineup powerful. If Hawkins is as good as some think, you could see Byrd move to second and compete with Greene. Beer will get another shot at first base. The outfield will have some question marks until Meredith gets back from his shoulder surgery. They really like Teodosio’s potential. The key will be the pitching because there are so many question marks. The roles will be defined the first month of the season. There are good arms on the roster, but inexperience is a major concern. The schedule is once again tough, and the conference should be great again, but this Clemson team can hit and should be considered a major factor entering the season. Mickey, Since our punter had a hurt hamstring when we played Alabama, why did we not use our backup punter? Our poor field position really hurt us in that game, and our hurt punter was ineffective that game. Thanks!-David David, I actually need to be corrected on that injury. Spiers hurt his groin before the game. At any rate, they felt he was still better than the second guy even with the injury.
