Everything was set up Saturday night. Jameis Winston's famous decision making finally caught up to him and FSU was ripe for the upset. The Atlantic Division title was at stake. A possible ACC title was on the line. Who knows, maybe even a birth in the national playoffs could have been in the cards. And the Tigers played well enough to beat the top-ranked team in the country.
However, the Tigers also made enough mistakes to lose and in the end the catastrophic mistakes doomed the upset effort.
In my opinion, the major mistakes made by Clemson were too much to overcome.
The first major opportunity lost came on the Tigers' second drive of the game. Clemson drove down to the three-yard line and faced third and goal.

As a result the Tigers sent Amon Lakip to attempt a 23-yard field goal but that opportunity was also missed. So instead of a 7-0 lead, the game was still scoreless.
Lakip also missed a 40-yard attempt on the first play of the fourth quarter. The first kick could have broken a 0-0 tie. His second miss could have broken a 10-10 tie. You can't miss two short field goals and expect to beat the nation's top-ranked team on the road.
Perhaps the biggest play of the game came two plays after the Tigers appeared to score the go ahead touchdown on a pass from Watson to

The only real catastrophe the defense suffered came with a little more than six minutes left. The Noles had the ball and faced second and 24 at their own 26-yard line. Sean Maguire throw deep to Rashad Greene, Clemson defensive back

There were other issues including failure on short yardage situations. In the end the Tigers played well enough to win but it is almost impossible to win when you make this many major mistakes.
