Tigers climbing baseball polls after six wins in a row |
The Tigers, winners of six games in a row, sport a 31-17 overall record and 14-10 ACC mark, good for second place in the Atlantic Division behind Florida State (16-8). Clemson, who is 23-8 at home, 7-8 in away games, and 1-1 in neutral-site contests, are in a tie for fifth place in the overall ACC standings, behind Virginia (18-6), Miami (FL) (18-6), Georgia Tech (17-7), and Florida State. Clemson is tied with Virginia Tech.
Clemson, who has been ranked in the top 25 by at least one poll every week since the start of the 2009 season (a span of 30 weeks), is averaging 8.8 runs per game and hitting .307 with a .492 slugging percentage, .412 on-base percentage, 106 doubles, nine triples, 63 home runs, and 83 steals in 48 games. The pitching staff has a 4.60 ERA and .276 opponents’ batting average along with 326 strikeouts against 157 walks in 432.0 innings pitched. The Tigers are fielding at a .959 clip as well. Parker leads the squad with a .392 batting average, 17 homers, 10 doubles, 50 RBIs, 58 runs, a .759 slugging percentage, and a .519 on-base percentage in 45 games. He moved into a tie for eighth place in school history with his 43rd career home run on Sunday at Maryland. Hinson is batting .354 with 10 homers, 53 RBIs, and a team-high 19 steals in 45 games (35 starts), while Miller is hitting .339 with a .460 on-base percentage and eight steals. Freeman, who is riding a team-season-long 16-game hitting streak, is batting .325 with seven homers, 16 doubles, one triple, and 45 RBIs. Schaus has added 10 homers, 10 doubles, and an ACC-high 62 RBIs. Harman is 6-1 with a 3.29 ERA and .233 opponents’ batting average along with 61 strikeouts against 21 walks in 76.2 innings pitched over 12 starts. Clemson’s best pitcher of late has been Frederick, who is 4-1 with a 3.35 ERA and two saves over 22 appearances (one start). The Tigers will conclude their seven-game stretch away from home with four games on the road this week, starting Tuesday night against Furman at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC. Then over the weekend, the Tigers will play at Wake Forest. TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Texas has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight week in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Longhorns (41-8) have won 23 of their last 24 games. Over the past weekend, Texas took two of three at Kansas St. Poll Notes: Several other teams have been exceptional. Coastal Carolina has won 22 of its last 23 games, Cal. St. Fullerton 12 of 13, Southern Mississippi 11 in a row and San Diego 7 straight. Four teams fell out of the poll this week, including Oregon (0-4 last week), Portland (1-3), New Mexico St. (0-4) and Arizona (1-3). New to the poll is Vanderbilt (35-13, won two of three at Louisiana St.), Fresno St. (30-20, won four straight at New Mexico St.), Southern Mississippi (29-17), and Clemson (31-17, won 6 straight).
