Clemson expected to name Steele as DC

by - Senior Writer -

JACKSONVILLE - Without saying so in just many words, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney intimated after today's Gator Bowl loss to Nebraska that a new defensive coordinator will be on board soon, possibly as early as this weekend.

That announcement, according to several sources coming out of Alabama, is expected to be that Swinney will hire current Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele away from the Crimson Tide to take over the defense at Clemson, which needs to replace former coordinator Vic Koenning, who left shortly after the end of the season when he learned he would not be retained after the bowl game.

Swinney addressed the media on Thursday after the bowl game, and when asked about the situation, said, "I will probably be making an announcement when I return to Clemson."

Steele's Crimson Tide are playing in Friday night's Sugar Bowl against Utah, and Swinney could be waiting until that game is over to make the announcement.

Steele is a 50-year old native of Dillon, S.C., and played one year at Furman University before transferring to Tennessee. He has experience in the college ranks coaching at Nebraska, Florida St., Tennessee, Oklahoma St. and New Mexico St., and in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers. He was also the head coach at Baylor from 1999-2002, compiling a 9-36 overall record.
