Spring Practice: Tigers Work Overtime Monday |
CLEMSON - Clemson's spring football workout ran a bit longer than usual on Monday, head coach Tommy Bowden trying to make up for scrimmage time lost because of last Saturday's rain. The Tigers got just 29 plays in before weather forced them out of Death Valley over the weekend, so Monday's practice included a few extra periods in an attempt to recoup some of the repetitions taken away by Mother Nature. Still, the extra work Monday won't fully make up for what was lost Saturday. "Time in that regard (repetitions), that's valuable work that can't be made back up," Bowden said. "That's why we went a little bit longer today than we traditionally would." Grading film of the 29 plays that were run Saturday, Bowden said he was happy to see the interior of his defensive line get a push at the line of scrimmage. "I think we'll be able to get outside pressure," he said, citing defensive ends such at Ricky Sapp and DaQuan Bowers. "But we've got to get a better push (up the middle). If (the quarterback) can step up an throw it, that's not good." The question, then, becomes whether the defensive line performed that well, or were they made to look more impressive by a young offensive line trying to find its way? "I'd say it was a combination of both," said Bowden. Elsewhere Monday, Bowden again praised the running of Rendrick Taylor. Since moving to running back, Taylor has been impressive in the hybrid tight-end/fullback slot the Clemson offense uses. "He ran really good inside, and I think that's where his future's going to be at the next level," said Bowden. "He's got that kind of body type." Asked if Taylor could see some time at tailback this fall, Bowden was hopeful. "That might allow us to redshirt one of the other guys coming in," he said.
