CLEMSON FOOTBALL

Dan Scott Prediction: Furman at Clemson

by - Correspondent -

Two games. Two wins. Only 10 more to go. I don't know if I can stand the pressure.

This week's matchup:

FURMAN (1-1) at CLEMSON (2-0)

WHEN CLEMSON HAS THE BALL

Furman's defense isn't one prone to attack on every play. Any blitzes are strictly calculated. The bend-but-don't-break mode of operation is partially designed to force offenses into making mistakes. So quarterback Cullen Harper and the offense must take care of the football and be patient. The Tigers have a definite size advantage up front, so the running game should come back in focus. Ultimately Clemson should wear down the Paladins.

ADVANTAGE - CLEMSON

WHEN FURMAN HAS THE BALL

Quarterback Renaldo Gray is a dual-threat weapon, and fullback Jerome Felton is an NFL-caliber player. But again Clemson will have a definite size and speed advantage. Watch for the Paladins to try lots of misdirection, the occasional reverse and any other trick play they can dream up to try and keep the Tigers honest. It may be fun for a while, but in the end it won't be nearly enough.

ADVANTAGE - CLEMSON

SPECIAL TEAMS

Another area where Clemson's speed will prove to be a weapon. Furman kicker Scott Beckler has a big leg, but last season was terribly inconsistent.

ADVANTAGE - CLEMSON

INTANGIBLES

Furman hopes to invoke the App. State-Michigan karma here, and early on perhaps the game is close. But there won't be enough magic to conjure up and upset in this big house.

ADVANTAGE - CLEMSON

BOTTOM LINE

This is a good game for the state and for Furman's pocket book. But if you're looking for the next major upset of 2007, look somewhere else.

THE PICK

Clemson 48, Furman 17
