by -

January 30, 2007 Clemson, SC-One-hundred and twenty-two Clemson student-athletes were named to the Dean's List according to data released by Clemson University on Tuesday. The total number of Dean's List students was the second highest total on record, the highest ever for a fall semester.

Clemson student-athletes had a 2.80 GPA overall, the second highest fall semester on record. Only a 2.82 overall GPA in the

fall of 2003 is higher. Two-hundred-and-twenty-eight

student-athletes were named to the academic honor roll (3.0 or better), the fourth highest total on record, and the second highest on record for a fall semester. There were 39 student-athletes named to the President's List (perfect 4.0), the fourth highest total on record.

"Overall we are proud of the academic performance of our sports programs," said Athletic Director Dr. Terry Don Phillips.

"Our coaches work very well with our academic staff. Becky Bowman and the Vickery Hall staff do a wonderful job with our academic

support. Also, we are very grateful to IPTAY for not only funding

student-athlete scholarships, but also for the funding of Vickery Hall."

Six programs had a 3.0 or better, led by the women's swimming team who had a 3.38 team GPA for the semester. A record 34 Clemson women's swimmers made the academic honor roll, including nine who had a perfect 4.0. It marked the 15th consecutive semester that Christopher Ip's program had a team GPA of 3.0 or better. One of the highlights individually was the performance of the Balderston family.

The brother and sister combination of Julie and Matt Balderston both made the Dean's List.

The women's soccer program, who reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament on the field in the fall semester, had a 3.32 team GPA under Head Coach Todd Bramble, the second best team GPA among Clemson's 13 programs. It was the 13th consecutive semester of a 3.0 or better for that program.

Oliver Purnell's men's team had a 2.55 team GPA, the highest on record for a fall semester. That performance came after a 2.66 team GPA in the spring semester of 2006 that was the best for the program since the spring semester of 1983. Five Tigers were named to the academic honor roll in the fall, including starter Cliff Hammonds, who is on track to become the first Clemson basketball scholarship athlete to earn a degree in architecture.

semester since 1997. Five Lady Tigers were named to the Dean's

List, including the team's only senior Carrie Whitehurst.

The Lady Tigers improved their team GPA by 0.70 over the Spring semester, the biggest improvement for one semester by any Clemson program since the women's tennis program improved by 0.70 in 1994, and just 0.04 off the improvement record set by the Clemson men's tennis program in 1992.

Speaking of men's tennis, Chuck Kriese's team had a 3.04 team GPA, best among Clemson men's programs and the highest GPA in the program's history. It was an improvement of 0.44 points over the spring semester. Seven of Kriese's student-athletes were named to the academic honor roll.
