CLEMSON RECRUITING

Virginia Tight End Commits to Tigers

CLEMSON – The Tigers received a verbal commitment from its tight end of the future when Brian Linthicum of Charlottesville, VA announced at a press conference on Thursday he would attend Clemson University. Linthicum had offers from California, Boston College, Michigan State, Purdue and Virginia.

“I am really excited about it,” said Linthicum. “I’ve wanted to make a decision the last couple months. I had no idea that I would end up at Clemson but now that I know, I am excited to get there, and I’m definitely ready to play.”

Linthicum said that he liked the Clemson offense and his opportunity to play early.

“They run the two and three tight end sets. I have the opportunity to come in and play as a freshman."

The 6-foot-5 220-pound St. Anne's-Belfield star is on track to graduate in December with a 1900 SAT score and 3.4 GPA. He indicated the plans were to enroll early in Clemson and go through spring practice in 2007. Prized Clemson quarterback recruit Willy Korn who is also enrolling early would be his roommate and both would get a jump on learning the Clemson offense.

St. Anne's-Belfield coach John Blake said several schools tried to get in late with Linthicum’s recruiting including Virginia who had a scholarship come available in the last week, but Clemson offered him early and really made him feel comfortable. Also according to Blake, Virginia Tech also had an offer on the table but called last week to say it was no longer available.

“He's happy,” said Blake. “He's content with the choice he's made. It's been a very tough process on him, but I think he's done a great job and handled himself well.”

Linthicum was named all-state as a junior at both the tight end and defensive end positions. He tallied 17 catches for 306 yards and three touchdowns in a run oriented offense.

Clemson tight end coach Billy Napier recruited Linthicum for the Tigers.
