Reports Have Smart Returning To Clemson

by - Correspondent -

CLEMSON - Multiple media outlets are reporting today that Shaka Smart will be the next assistant basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Clemson.

Smart, a former assistant under Oliver Purnell, came with the current Tigers' head coach to Clemson in 2003. But after little more than a month on the job, Smart left Purnell's staff to join the coaching staff at Akron.

Purnell was on a plane this morning, and his secretary said he would be unavailable for comment until sometime this afternoon.

Smart, a 1999 graduate of Kenyon (Gambier, OH) College, helped Akron to a 23-10 record this past season - the most victories in school history. The Zips advanced to the NIT, where they defeated Temple in the tournament's first round for the school's first-ever postseason victory.
