Tigers Take Out ETSU in OT

by -

CLEMSON -- Staring at a four game losing streak, Clemson rallied down by six points in the final 1:16 to extend East Tennessee State to overtime. Clemson (4-3) then outscored the Buccaneers (5-2) 18-4 in the extra period to win 100-86 on Monday night. The Tigers have never lost to ETSU.

The Tigers survived despite committing 25 turnovers. The Buccaneers’ 20 steals was a record for an opponent in Littlejohn Coliseum. Clemson pulled down 28 more rebounds than the Buccaneers which was the largest Clemson rebound margin in over 15 years.

Clemson freshman guard Vernon Hamilton converted a 3-point play with 51.9 left to draw the Tigers within 82-80. Olu Babalola's basket with 8.9 seconds tied the game at 82. East Tennessee State had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but Tim Smith’s shot attempt was changed by Sharrod Ford.

“Sharrod Ford was huge for us,” said Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell. “When he plays big like that we are obviously a different team.”

In overtime, Clemson made 11 out 13 free throws to put the game out of reach. The Tigers had lost 7 out of 8 previous overtime games.

“In the overtime we obviously played very, very well,” said Purnell. “We didn’t turn it over. We made our free throws and we defended. That is what you have to do to win 5 or 6 minute games.”

Sharrod Ford led the Tigers with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 8 blocks. Shawan Robinson added 19 points and Chris Hobbs had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Zakee Wadood led East Tennessee State with 24 points and 10 steals. Ben Rhoda added 19.
