NCSU Ruins Senior Night for the Tigers

by -

CLEMSON – In an important game for both teams NCSU held off a late Tiger run to beat Clemson 63-60 on senior night at Littlejohn Coliseum Wednesday night. With the win North Carolina State (16-10, 9-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) improves its chances for a NCAA bid. Despite the loss Clemson (15-11, 5-10) seems to be in good shape to at least avoid the play in game in the ACC Tournament due to a Virginia loss to Georgia Tech on Wednesday night. Since Clemson swept the Cavaliers this season it would hold the tiebreaker if both ended the season with the same ACC record. There could have been a possible fairy tale ending for Ed Scott in his last appearance in Littlejohn. Scott hit Clemson’s only three pointer of the night with 15 seconds left to cut the Wolfpack lead to 60-57. After a pair of made Wolfpack free throws, Josh Powell fouled Clemson’s Tomas Nagys under the goal as he made a basket. Nagys who was also playing in his last home game completed the three point play to make the game 62-60.

The Tigers then sent 90% free throw shooter Scooter Sherrill to the line with 6.5 seconds left, but he made only one of two giving the Tigers one last chance. Scott pushed the ball up the court but was double teamed, and he lost control of the ball as he neared the 3-point line without ever getting off a shot. “I thought our guys did everything the last minute and a half that you could do down six to put yourself in position to tie or win the game,” said head coach Larry Shyatt. “Ed just mishandled the ball. We were going to run something where Julian (Betko) had been open the possession before where he is the take out man. Eddie takes two with him every time he drives. Eddie puts it on the floor and flips back to Julian, and he just mishandled the ball. Eddie played such a good second half. I would have not minded it, and he knew it, that if he been able for him to elevate and take the shot off the dribble. So he had either or.” "I said before the season I would not trade point guards with anybody in the country and I would not change today." Clemson was led in scoring by Scott with 21 and Nagys with 13. The Tigers have lost three straight conference games after winning three straight. Scooter Sherrill scored a career high 24 points, Josh Powell had 14 and Cameron Bennerman added nine for North Carolina State who have won three of their last five games. Clemson led 12-7 early in the game but lost control of the game as the Wolfpack went on a 19-2 run to pull away from the Tigers. An Ed Scott layup at the buzzer left the Tigers trailing 32-21 at the half. In the second half the Tigers got the game to a two point deficit several times but was never able to tie the game or take the lead. “Our guys really fought back on a night where the shooting was just not there," said Shyatt. "We kept scratching and clawing to get back into it. One of my assistants told me that we had the ball four times down two in the second half. You have to give a lot of credit to North Carolina State. They made 8 three pointers to our one. It is tough to spot a team like that 21 points." Clemson will finish the regular season on the road at Georgia Tech on Saturday.
