Tobacco Road Smokes Tigers Again

Raleigh, NC - Make it 2-33 on the road in the ACC for Larry Shyatt.

Like many of the other road losses during the Shyatt era, N.C. State established an early lead and ran away from Clemson in the second half and won 78-56 in front of a sold-out RBC Center Sunday afternoon.

N.C. State was able to empty its bench while sending the Tigers to 11-6 overall and 1-6 in the ACC.

N.C. State’s ability to hit the 3-point shot and Clemson turnovers negated a decent day by the Clemson offense.

“Clemson packed it in and played some zone,” said N.C. State coach Herb Sendek. So, N.C. State shot over the zone and Clemson could only watch the ball go into the net.

Despite shooting 65 percent in the second half, Clemson was outshot by N.C. State in the second half and outscored by 14 in the same time period.

Julius Hodge scored 18 in the second half after scoring just two points in the first half.

Clemson was led by Ed Scott’s 12 points. Chey Christy added 9 points and Jarrod Ford had 8 points. Ray Henderson played just ten minutes after starting. He scored just two points.

Josh Powell added 17 points and Marcus Melvin scored 15 points for the Wolfpack.

N.C. State was 14-31 on 3-point attempts and had six different players put one in from 3-point range.

Said Clemson coach Bobby Hussey, “I thought our guys worked hard in the first half covering (their 3-point shots). We made some adjustments and then in the second half maybe we got a little tired and they came back at us with the three point game. We really turned the ball over in a lot of cases where we were pressing a bit.”

After starting the season averaging just 13.4 turnovers a game, Clemson has averaged over 18 turnovers in its last three games. Clemson had 17 turnovers Sunday, many of them unforced.

“I thought our guys did play with a great deal of unselfishness,” said Sendek.

Hodge’s play was key for the Wolfpack.

“I came out in the second half and I think I did a good job,” he said. “In the second half, I just wanted to step my game up because in the first half I was looking real sluggish.”

N.C State led by eight at the half and the Tigers had a chance to cut the lead back to single digits with nine minutes left. However, Clemson couldn’t convert on offense on its possession and N.C. State never looked back.

Clemson finishes the first half of the conference schedule with a home game against Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
