Clemson Routs Morris Brown |
CLEMSON - Clemson shook off a lethargic first half effort Saturday and got a
huge effort from its big men, rolling over Morris Brown 75-52 at Littlejohn
Coliseum.
Ray Henderson, Sharrod Ford and Chris Hobbs combined for 36 points inside,
shooting 17-of-21 from the field against the overmatched Wolverines.
"The second half I was really impressed," said Clemson head coach Larry
Shyatt. "I like the way our bigs got down the floor. I like the way we took
care of the basketball. It's good to see a box score where four of our bigs
lead us in scoring. I think that's a good sign."
Ed Scott and Chey Christie each scored eight points on an afternoon in which
Shyatt went to his bench early and often. Everyone who dressed saw playing
time, and all but three players scored.
The Tigers (10-1, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 35-22 at the break.
"We turned it over a little bit too much in the first half," Shyatt said.
"I'm never going to say our players acted or played bored because that's
probably not a good term you would want to use, but nonetheless things came
pretty easy early after we got the lead and I think they expected it.
Amien Hicks led Morris Brown (1-13) with 10 points.
The game was scheduled in part to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. As part of the celebration, Craig Mobley - Clemson's first
African-American scholarship athlete - was invited back to campus and tossed
the ceremonial jump ball in pregame ceremonies.
Mobley came to Clemson in the fall of 1969 and played basketball for two
years.
Clemson returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Chapel Hill to face the
University of North Carolina. The Tigers have never won in Chapel Hill.
