Clemson Downs Winthrop, 78-61 |
ANDERSON -- Clemson made a school record tying 8-10 three-point shots
and made 15-21 field goal attempts from anywhere in the second half in defeating Winthrop 78-61 on December 19 at The Civic Center of Anderson. The victory avenged a 66-61 loss to Winthrop last year. Edward Scott led the Tigers with 24 points, a team best nine rebounds and four assists in his 40 minutes of play. He also made 4-5 three-point goals and 8-10 free throws. It was his second game in the 20s this year as he had a season high 25 against Penn State earlier in the year. Chey Christie was Clemson’s only other double figure scorer with 15 points, but the sophomore guard added a career high eight assists. Thus,Clemson’s starting backcourt had 39 points, 12 assists and jsut four turnovers for the evening. Sophomores Sharrod Ford and Olu Babalola added nine points apiece, while freshman Julian Betko had his best game of the year with eight points in 3-3 shooting. Betko connected on a pair of three-point goals, his second and third long distance shots of the season. Clemson held Winthrop to just 1-10 three-point shooting in the first half and made 5-6 of their own in running to a 33-25 lead at intermission. Clemson went on an 8-2 run to open the second half and held a 41-27 lead with 16:13 to go on a three-point goal by Betko. The Tigers led by 15 at 47-32 at the 13:52 mark, but Winthrop cut the deficit under 10 at 47-38 on a three-point goal by Pierre Wooten, who led Winthrop with 14 points and six assists. Winthrop made six three-point goals in eight attempts at one spurt, but could not get the deficit under double digits the remainder of the game. Clemson made 7- 8 free throws inside the last five minutes and a pair of Edward Scott to Sharrod Ford pass plays inside the last five minutes of the game clinched the victory for Clemson. Clemson had just nine turnovers for the game and five of those were offensive fouls, so the Tigers ball handling was excellent. Winthrop did win the rebounding battle, 35-31, the first time all year Clemson was defeated on the boards. But, Clemson held a 53.1 to 42.1 percent edge in field goal shooting.
