Clemson goes cold in the desert

by -

Not even a trip to the desert could help Clemson’s cold shooting.

The Tigers scored just 16 first half points and were just 4-for-19 from 3-point range in losing 63-47 at the McKale Center in Arizona Saturday afternoon.

Clemson (4-4) got off to a miserable start offensively – trailing 29-16 at the break - and never fully recovered, missing all nine of its 3-point shots in the first half while shooting 31 percent overall. Andre Young led the Tigers with 17 points.

"It's the same story for us, too many missed shots in the paint," Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said. “We missed some shots we need to make. We probably took a few quick shots that weren't good shots, and I think that gave Arizona some momentum."

The Tigers got to within nine with just over four minutes left, but Arizona was quickly able to put Clemson away, getting two baskets inside from Solomon Hill and a soaring fast-break dunk by Nick Johnson on a nifty drop pass from Josiah Turner.

Clemson's previous three losses had been by a combined seven points and the Tigers blew out Iowa in their last road game, a solid start for a team that lost 40 percent of its scoring and has six first-year players.

Clemson missed nine of its first 10 shots to quickly fall into a 10-point hole. The Tigers only hit a few more shots in the first half after that, going 8-for-35 from the field and missing all 10 of its 3-pointers.

Clemson fell into a deeper hole to start the second half, then started dropping shots, chipping away at the lead until it was down to 49-42 on T.J. Sapp's layup with 4:23 left.

"I believed we had a chance to win the game right there," freshman K.J. McDaniels said. "But Arizona has a good team. They capitalized on some plays and they came up with some big shots at the end."

The Tigers didn't have enough to keep it going, allowing Arizona to go on an 8-0 run and the victory. No other Tiger scored in double digits, but Devin Booker added nine to back up Young. McDaniels came off the bench to score seven points in 18 minutes of work. Sapp was just 1-for-8 from the field.

Clemson was just 5-for-5 from the line as Arizona was called for a total of 11 personal fouls in the contest.

"At the end of the day, we have to better offensively," Brownell said. "We have to have guys make more plays and we have to shoot the ball better."
