Clemson opponents rightly fear the words, “caught by Watkins” and “Watkins, back deep to receive.” Here are two words that should scare them even more: Sneak Two. That’s the name of Watkins’ favorite route, and it’ll surprise you. It’s a simple little pattern of about 8 yards. Watkins’ job is to find a soft spot in the zone defense, squat in it, and wait for the ball. “You can call that play any time you want to,” he says. “It’s open every play.”

That should make every Clemson opponent cower. Watkins is the most dynamic freshman, if not player, in the country. He is fast and aggressive and hard to tackle and has great hands … and the thing he loves most is a dinky little catch, and he loves it because he has to use his brain. This is like Reggie Jackson professing his love for the bunt, Nolan Ryan celebrating the changeup, Kevin Durant glowing about free throws. If you think that’s getting carried away, can you name another freshman this talented who loves and understands the intricacies of the game?
