In his first career start for the Tigers, Boyd was able to overcome a shaky first half to lead Clemson to a 41-19 win over Troy. The season could not have started any better for the 2008 Elite 11 quarterback, as his first pass of the game went for a 33-yard touchdown. Coming out of the halftime trailing, Boyd threw two second half touchdowns to secure the opening day victory. Overall he completed 20-of-30 passes for 264 yard and three touchdowns with an interception.
