Sapp Ready For Shrine Bowl
Height: 6-4 Weight: 240 Hometown: Bamberg, SC (Bamberg Erhardt HS) Class: 2006
Ricky Sapp is one of the most sought after defensive ends in the country. A player, who would have every right to brag, showcased his humility on Sunday.
"It is a privilege actually. I never thought I would be in the Shrine Bowl, but it is a great thing."
Sapp and Bamber-Erhardt had a strong season this year only losing two games, both of which came at the hands of Lamar.
"It was a great season. We worked hard and the seniors came together. During the season, we had a great year, but it came down to the end and we fell short.
How did Sapp rate himself personally this season?
"I did real good in some big games. Against Lamar, I had some big tackles. In the last game I had a couple big tackles, but we were not able to win the game."
At 6-5, 225 pounds, Sapp is a very special athlete. He also excels in basketball and track at Bamberg.
"I also play basketball and track. I play small forward, power forward, and center. I averaged about 12 points a game. In the 100 meter, my fastest time was a 10.6."
Sapp also had a chance to reflect on his early commitment to Clemson.
"I grew up a Florida State fan, but when I made a trip to Clemson. I feel in love with Death Valley. Coming down that hill, it made it all, so I just decided to go ahead and commit."
Under Vic Koenning's defensive scheme, one position that has been attractive to NFL scouts the last two years is the bandit position. At Troy, Demarcus Ware played his way into a top 15 pick in the NFL draft, and after a breakout season, Gaines Adams has petitioned the NFL to see where he stands. Sapp looks to be the next in line for stardom at the bandit position.
"They want me to play the bandit. I saw a lot of schemes were they did a lot of twists and letting him go. I think I would really fit in well there with my speed and ability."
One thing that never changes year to year is how humbling an experience the hospital trip is for the players. Sapp was no different.
"It is special to come in and visits with the kids. You know they are the reason we are here."
