UGA coach Mark Fox certainly picked the right time to call his next target, Gaines.

“Really, it was Coach Fox that won me over,” Gaines told the AJC. “On Monday night, my mom and I were sitting in my room and praying what decision to make, and what schools to really consider and look at. It was like five minutes after we got done praying, Coach Fox gave us a call. We felt like that really a sign from God. We asked Him to show us as fast as he could what schools to pick. After we got that phone call, we really knew that it was Georgia.”

Fox’s phone call pushed UGA over the top with Gaines, but there were other reasons why the Bulldogs edged out his finalists. “They all sort of canceled out each other themselves.”

Gaines on Georgia Tech: “When they signed Chris Bolden, that sort of affected my decision because I know we play the same position. I knew it would be a battle for playing time.”

Clemson: “They had too many guards over there.”

Iowa: “It was sort of the distance factor.”

South Carolina: “I could’ve gone there and started immediately, but I was just really feeling Georgia.”

He averaged 21 points last season as a junior at Cobb County’s Whitefield Academy.
