Roderick Byers committed to the Oregon Ducks despite pressure from locals to play in-state. At the beginning of the recruiting process, he was unsure whether Oregon was really there to recruit him or to see Clowney, who is also from Rock Hill, SC at nearby South Point High School.

Here is a response via facebook from Byers about why he commited to Oregon:

"I chose Oregon to not be in the shadows of Clowney? I chose Oregon because of where God led me. All do respect to him but idc if julius peppers or freeney was there. I made the decision to be GREAT. Get a DEGREE, and be a inspiration to others. My purpose is to do GOD'S WORK. Football is only for a season nd I wanna live for a lifetime...What God has for me is for me nd Its way beyond football."

Many experts still believe Clemson might be able to sway Byers since the school was a favorite of his growing up.

He had offers from Oregon, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Texas Tech, and Wake Forest.
