Clemson has made it clear that they will sign a kicker in the 2006 class. Richard Jackson from Greer, SC is a name many are familiar with and holds a Clemson offer. If Jackson does not make a decision soon, it is likely Clemson will offer Brad Upson from Spalding County, Georgia.
At one camp, Upson connected on nine straight field goals from beyond 50 yards without the use of a tee. When Upson was in Clemson, he also punted very well. "I would consider myself a better placekicker than punter. At Clemson, I punted better than I ever have in my life. I performed at the right time, but I need to improve as a punter. I feel very comfortable kicking field goals and kicking off." Upson is very similiar to current placekicker Jad Dean. Upson has a very strong leg, and consistently puts kickoffs through the endzone. Upson has offers from LSU and Texas A&M, but says Clemson has expressed interest. "LSU and Texas A&M have already offered me. Clemson and Georgia are two other schools that are recruiting me." We still believe Jackson is a Clemson lean, and he addresses a more immediate need at punter. If Jackson goes elsewhere, expect Clemson to immediately shift their focus to Upson.
