It is pretty safe to say Clemson did a tremendous job with out-of-state recruiting in 2006. The Tigers land the number one prospect in Illinois and Florida. Jamie Cumbie is originally from South Carolina, and he grew up a Clemson fan, but he finished his high school career in Illinois.

Cumbie got everything rolling for the class of 2006. Cumbie chose Clemson over Notre Dame. Cumbie said Clemson was where he hearted lied, but he had a tremendous amount of respect for Charlie Weis.

Cumbie was a tight end/defensive end prospect. At 6-7, 255 pounds, Cumbie could be a force on either side of the ball. Currently, we believe he will be best served at defensive end. The Tigers do not have the quality of depth at defensive end that they would like to have.

If everything goes as planned, Cumbie will likely shoot up the depth chart quickly in August. He will compete with Brandon Cannon for the number two spot behind Phillip Merling.

The one thing to watch with Cumbie in the off-season will be the baseball draft. In our last interview with Cumbie, he said he was just beginning to prepare for baseball, and he would just have to see what happens.

Freshman Forecast: 2nd Team Defensive End
