With Jamie Cumbie and Ricky Sapp signing with the class of 2006, it would appear Clemson would be in good shape at defensive end. Cumbie and Sapp were two of the nation’s finest defensive end prospects, however defensive end may very well be the #1 priority in 2007.

The Tigers will look to add depth behind Cumbie and Sapp with Gaines Adams departing, and the very realistic possibility that Clemson may only have Phillip Merling two more years.

The good news for Clemson is they will not have to look far. There are two dominant defensive ends in the state of South Carolina. One of whom is Carlos Dunlap.

Dunlap holds offers from both in-state schools, but he is hearing from a host of others.

“Clemson and South Carolina were the first to offer me. I think Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia are real close to offering.”

Burton Burns is recruiting Dunlap for the Tigers, and the two are already forming a strong relationship.

“Coach Burns recruited Byron. I saw him at the school a lot last year, plus we camp at Clemson. Coach Burns is a really cool guy to talk to.”

Dunlap does not list an early favorite.
