Watson surges in latest ESPN Heisman Watch

ESPN Expert's Poll released its latest Heisman Watch and Clemson sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson received 32 votes and surged to 2nd place overall behind only Alabama running back Derrick Henry.

"Watson has gone from Heisman afterthought to serious candidate in two short weeks, which likely has as much to do with the 850 yards of total offense Watson has amassed in his past two games as on-field struggles and key injuries to other contenders," ESPN said. "Clemson has never had a player finish in even the top five of Heisman voting -- though John Heisman himself coached there from 1900 to 1903."

Watson completed 24-of-35 passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns in Clemson’s 33-13 win over Wake Forest.

He has passed for 2944 yards with 26 touchdowns and ten interceptions (QBR of 85.8) this season. He also has rushed for 642 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

The full list of Heisman candidates includes RB Derrick Henry (#1), QB Deshaun Watson (#2), RB Christian McCaffrey (#3), QB Baker Mayfield (#4), RB Dalvin Cook (#5), RB Leonard Fournette (#6), QB Keenan Reynolds (#7), QB Dak Prescott (#8), WR Corey Coleman (#9) and QB Luke Falk (#10).

In his rookie campaign, Watson completed 67.9% of his passes for 1,466 yards (10.7 per attempt) with 14 touchdowns and only two interceptions for a tremendous quarterback rating of 188.57. Another superlative is that he had a nation's best 10.7 yards per pass attempt.
