Swinney discusses team depth on offense

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was on the ACC teleconference on Sunday and answered a question about his offensive depth on his team.

Running back C.J. Fuller scored on a four-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter (1st career TD) and wide receiver Trevion Thompson had an important third-down catch in the fourth quarter against the Gamecocks.

"Well, I think it says a lot about our depth," Swinney said. "We've recruited well, and we have confidence in our guys. You know, I've talked about Fuller a lot, and he just hasn't had as much opportunity, but I've said many times, hey, this kid is on his way, and he's improved. Trevion has had several big plays for us this year, but we've got quality depth, and when we've needed guys to step up, they have."

Swinney believes that Morris and Guillermo are two guys that have stepped up on the offensive line this year.

"Maverick Morris has been starting the last few games and has performed very well," Swinney said. "Nobody was talking about Maverick Morris back in August, I can assure you, and here he is our starting right guard and has stepped in for Crowder and has done a heck of a job. A guy like Jay Guillermo who we weren't even sure was going to be with us and what he's done this year."

Veteran wide receiver Germone Hopper has had a prominent role (15 catches) in the last four games. Hopper has 21 receptions for 317 yards and a touchdown this season.

"I think we've got several guys who have stepped up big time, and then just some of these guys who have developed across the season, and that's a guy like Deon and then Ray-Ray gets hurt and you look at the past couple games that Germone Hopper has had, we've got confidence in our guys, and we don't try to force things," Swinney said. "That's what I love about Deshaun. He's going to take what's there, and he stays within the offense, and that was a huge play in that game for sure, great throw, and well-executed by Hopper and doing his job to try to hold the corner, and then great job by Trevion getting his depth and getting in that void and just an absolutely beautiful throw by Deshaun."
