Spurrier admits that he pulls for Clemson |
Former Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier has a new book called 'My Life in Football, Doing it Differently--and Winning' that hit shelves on Tuesday.
Spurrier was at ESPN studios in Bristol, Connecticut on Tuesday morning to promote his new book and discussed several topics including his public admission that he cheers for his old school's rival. "Dabo and I get along wonderfully well. His wife and my wife - when we’re at some of these events like the Chick-fil-A golf event - we spend a lot of time with Dabo and Kathleen," Spurrier said live on SportsCenter. "I actually pull for Clemson occasionally, which most South Carolina people do not, because of Dabo. He does a super job there and I really like him." Spurrier also had good things to say about Deshaun Watson. "I really like Deshaun Watson, the Clemson QB," Spurrier said on ESPN's First Take show. "He is a class young man." Naturally, Gamecock fans took to Twitter to showcase their frustrations with their legendary former coach. Steve Spurrier just said he cheers for Clemson every now and then. Steve, you're dead to me. S T O P spurrier said he occasionally pulls for clemson??????? .@SteveSpurrierUF just said @SportsCenter he "occasionally pulls for clemson." nope. we're done. #gogamecocks @BrandiCMills @MeetMeAtTapps Never mind, Spurrier just said he pulls for Clemson occasionally. Nah bruh When you see Spurrier on ESPN and remember how he quit on the team last year?? pic.twitter.com/gPOt1St654 Swinney said back in November 2015 that he would miss Spurrier on the sidelines. "I will miss Coach Spurrier from a college football standpoint because he’s one of the best ever to walk the sidelines, but he will resurface somewhere and be a part of the game," Swinney said. Swinney was prophetic as Spurrier is now an ambassador for Florida and will have Florida's field renamed in his honor with the Steve Spurrier-Florida Field this week.
