Six Tigers on Maxwell, Bednarik Award lists

The Maxwell Football Clubs announced its watch lists recently for the 2016 Maxwell Award and the 2016 Bednarik Award.

Clemson was the only FBS school with at least three selections to each list.

A Trio of Tigers were nominated for the Maxwell Award which has been given to the top college football since 1937. Quarterback Deshaun Watson, running back Wayne Gallman, and wide receiver Mike Williams were all named to the prestigious list.

Watson finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting last season and will be one of the favorites in 2016. Watson completed 333-of-491 passes for 4,104 yards and 35 touchdowns and also had 207 rushes for 1,105 yards and 12 scores this past season.

Gallman had 283 rushing attempts for 1527 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

Williams had 1,030 receiving yards and 6 TDs in 2014 and 77 catches for 1,346 yards and nine touchdowns in his collegiate career.

Three Clemson defenders were included on the Bednarik Award which is handed out to the top defensive player in college football since 1995. Linebacker Ben Boulware, Cordrea Tankersley, and Carlos Watkins were nominated for the award.

In 2015, Boulware had 138 tackles, two interceptions, and three caused fumbles and was named first-team All-ACC and Academic All-ACC team after the season.

For this past season, Watkins had 67 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 8 tackles for loss and was the 8th leading tackler for Clemson at his nose guard position. After the regular season, he was named First-team All-ACC by the media.

Tankersley had 48 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack, five interceptions, and nine pass breakups last season.

Semifinalists for the 80th annual Maxwell Award will be announced October 31, 2016, while the three finalists for the award will be announced on November 21, 2016.
