Nick Saban not interested in Kiffin's help against Clemson |
Former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin appeared on ESPN's Mike and Mike on Tuesday morning and oddly said that he still hoped to help out Alabama for the National Championship game against Clemson on Monday.
"We are checking that out," Kiffin said. "We do not know legally whether we can do that. Sidelines for sure would not (be legal), but the press box would be ideal because that would exchange (new offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian) and I. I can do what his role was and he can do what my role was and come down to the field and coach the players." These were strange comments considering Alabama had just announced on Monday that they were parting ways with Kiffin. However, Alabama coach Nick Saban cleared up the confusion about Kiffin's comments and said that his team would like a clean break from Kiffin and he will not be back to coach or have any input on the upcoming National Championship game. "It's not possible from a legal standpoint, and it's not something we're interested in pursuing," Saban said, per the Alabama Media Group. "We made a statement about this yesterday, and really don't have much else to say about it," Saban said during Tuesday's media teleconference. "It's difficult sometimes when you're in a situation when you have a new opportunity and a new job, and we mutually agreed that in the best interest of everyone that this would be the best thing for us to do relative to the experience that we had in preparation for Washington and playing in the game." Saban got a little testy with the media and said he doesn't want to talk about his game plan for Clemson. "You know, I don't think there's a whole lot more to say about that. Our coaches are working hard to try to put the best game plan we can together to play against a very good Clemson defense, and we're in the planning stages right now," Saban said. "I don't know why you all keep asking me what changes we're going to make. Dabo is a good friend of mine; maybe I'll just call him up and tell him what we're going to do." New offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will call the plays as the Crimson Tide try to win back-to-back National Championship games against Clemson.
