NEC Rookie of the Year commits to Clemson

by - Assoc. Editor -

Former Robert Morris freshman guard Marcquise Reed has committed to Clemson on Monday evening according to his twitter account.

Reed chose the Tigers over his other finalists - Tulsa, UMass and Southern California.

The 6-4 combo guard averaged 15.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game this season and was named unanimous Northeast Conference rookie of the year. He also had 22 points against Duke in the NCAA tournament (loss) and 21 points (9-14 shooting) against Clemson in the regular season (loss). His team won the NEC tournament championship in 2014.

He will have to sit out next season but would have three years left to play starting in the 2016-2107 season. Reed and recent transfer Shelton Mitchell could provide some firepower offensively after learning the new system.

Also, both transfer players will be able to practice for Clemson this season and give the Tigers a different look while playing 5 on 5 against each other.

TigerNet spoke with Reed this past weekend and he had great things to say about his Clemson visit with spending time with the Clemson coaching staff, to the players and also learning about the future basketball facilities.

"The coaches were real cool," Reed said. "I got to meet Coach (Brad) Brownell and his family. He's a down to earth guy and he's going to make sure you are going to work. And Coach (Richie) Riley, he's been recruiting me hard, and he's a real cool guy. Obviously they are in the ACC and that's attractive. The campus was pretty cool and the people real friendly. “It's a college town. Everybody gets love. The facilities they've got coming, Littlejohn gym, that's going to be nice so that's attractive. The players, they were cool. I got to spend a lot of time with Jaron Blossomgame, a real good dude. They said they want me on the team, they think they can go real far with me and I can help them out a lot."

Reed thinks that Clemson's style of play could suit his skills.

"They try to get a lot of stuff in transition and he (Brownell) bases his offense off the players he's got," Reed said. "He knows I like the up and down and coming off ball screens so it would be a lot of that, a lot of transition and transition ball screens. I like how he adapts to his players as the season goes on. My main role will be to come in and provide scoring like I've been doing."
