As for Beede, it's believed the six-foot-four, 200-pound right-hander out of Lawrence Academy in Massachusetts is using a threat of committing to Vanderbilt University as leverage.

"Obviously, you're hopeful, optimistic," Anthopoulos told reporters over the weekend. "But I think we're also realistic, as well, that there are no guarantees you sign any of these players."

Former Blue Jays major/minor league scout and contract negotiator Keith Law, who now works for ESPN.com, posted to his Twitter account Monday morning that there is a 90 per cent chance Toronto signs at least one of Beede and Norris.

Should Anthopoulos fail to sign either Beede or Norris, the Blue Jays would be entitled to a compensatory pick in next year's draft. That selection would be made at the same slot, plus one (i.e. 22nd overall for Beede).

He is regarded by many baseball experts to be the top high school lefty in the draft. He went 8-2 this past season with a 2.24 earned-run average.
