Elliott: Hunter Johnson stood out in Wednesday's scrimmage

True freshman quarterback caught the eye of offensive coordinator Tony Elliott during Wednesday's scrimmage and Elliott said he stood out among the quarterbacks.

"It was first time that he really got a bunch, bunch of reps and gave him some opportunity with the first team," Elliott said. "We let those guys run around and let the defense get after him. You saw him extend some plays with his legs. He looked confident in the pocket. He made some good throws and put together some drives."

Elliott said the game seems to be slowing down for Johnson, and he looked comfortable running the offense.

"You started to see things slow down. When you got a young quarterback in there that is responsible for a lot of things, early on you can see they are a little jittery," Elliott said. "They are looking to the sideline to confirm signals, just to make sure they got the right thing. He's now pushing the tempo. He looks confident, stepping in there calling the plays to the offensive line. He's going to the right spot with the balls. If it is not there he pulled it down and took off and extended a couple plays with his legs. He even did some good things with our designed quarterback runs."

Elliott said Kelly Bryant and Zerrick Cooper also did some nice things in the scrimmage.

"Kelly did some good things too especially running the football and extending some plays," Elliott said. "He put the balls in position but guys didn't make the catch for him. I think Cooper got in there as well. He showed some ability to run the football and also made some good throws."
