Deshaun Watson named finalist for 2016 Heisman Trophy Award

by - Assoc. Editor -

The 2016 Heisman Trophy finalists were announced on Monday evening and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson was named as a finalist along with Louisville quarterack Lamar Jackson, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Michigan defensive back Jabrill Peppers, and Oklahoma wide reciever Dede Westbrook.

Watson passed for 23-for-34 for 288 yards, three passing touchdowns, and an interception to lead Clemson to the 2016 ACC Championship in a 42-35 win over Virginia Tech. He also rushed 17 times for 85 yards and two scores.

For the season, Watson has completed 329 of 487 passes for 3914 yards and 37 touchdowns. He ranks fourth in the nation in completions, fifth in touchdown passes and eighth in completion percentage and eighth in total offense. His 37 touchdown passes are a Clemson season record.

Deshaun Watson is the best player," Swinney said on Sunday to reporters. "He might not have been the best player in September, but he has been the best player in October, November, and December. His stats will bear that out, but what he has done, it's incredible."

I guess I have to agree with Swinney. Watson deserves the Heisman Trophy award because I'm not a big fan of any possible Heisman winner on a team that loses three games and two in a row to end the season [Lamar Jackson]. Winning games should count especially when comparing leadership qualities of quarterbacks and Watson has been the best player when it mattered the most. Watson is also the only finalist that is currently on a team that will play in this year's college football playoff.

Let's be real...a real Heisman winner doesn't lose to a mediocre Kentucky team to end the season.

The Heisman Trophy Award will be presented on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York.
