David Wilkins discusses Confederate flag issue |
South Carolina governor Nikki Haley held a press conference on Monday afternoon calling for the Confederate Flag to be removed from the statehouse grounds.
"That flag, while an integral part of our past, does not represent the future of our state," Haley said during her press conference. "By removing a symbol that divides us, we can move forward as a state in harmony and we can honor the nine blessed souls who are in heaven,” Haley added. Dylann Roof, a 21-year-old is being investigated with the murder of nine individuals during a bible study at the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston six days ago. Clemson Board of Trustee Chairman David Wilkins agrees with Nikki Haley that the confederate battle flag should be removed. "15 years ago I was part of the very emotional efforts to move the confederate flag from atop the statehouse dome to a monument on the grounds," Wilkins posted on his facebook page on Tuesday afternoon. "It was an important compromise in moving forward. Yesterday, Governor Haley and our state leaders announced they want to take the next critical step by removing the flag from the monument and off the statehouse grounds. It is time. God bless South Carolina."
