was awarded on Friday as the Walter Camp Football Foundation's American Hero.

Rodriguez was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze star medal for his heroics at the Battle of Kamdesh.

"Twenty-two of us were injured and eight of us were killed," Rodriguez said at the award ceremony to the audience and the Hartford Courant . "It was an 18-hour firefight. We were surrounded by all sides. I threw about 52 hand grenades, shot every rifle I had, we were killing at point-blank range, air support came in from all directions."
