Clemson trustees approve reports on university’s past, present and future

by -

CLEMSON — Clemson University trustees heard positive reports on admissions, capital projects, academic restructuring, athletics and communicating the school’s history during their quarterly meetings on campus this week.

Recommendations from the Task Force on the History of Clemson to the Board of Trustees

Undergraduate enrollment applications are up, numerous facilities are under construction across campus statewide, fundraising is on track and athletic teams are winning.

President James P. Clements posed the question: “How do we make a great university even better?”

He presented a new plan, Clemson Forward, now under way to move the university into the future, providing new opportunities, goals and ways to have an impact and make a difference. The plan is built on four key foundations: Research, Engagement, Academics and Living.

He said the plan will deliver real solutions to real problems facing our state and nation.

Clements also announced a new cornerstone gift of $3.3 million to athletics from trustee Joe Swann and his wife, Barbara Ann “Bobbi” Swann.

Pushing his lifetime giving total near $5 million, Swann joins fellow Clemson trustee Bill Hendrix, along with Betty Poe and an anonymous donor in their support of Clemson Athletics’ facilities projects. The new addition to Littlejohn Coliseum housing practice court, locker rooms and coaches’ offices for the basketball programs will be named Swann Pavilion.

In other action, the trustees approved:

adding new online delivery for the existing Ph.D. in recreational therapy

several name changes: Communication Studies Department and Communications Studies BA program to Communication Department and Communication BA; and Nutrition and Dietetics Concentration within the Food Science BS program to the Nutrition Concentration

closing the Economic Research on the Family Center and the Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. and MS concentrations

rescinded their previous ratification of state institution bond application for the?Advanced Technology and Education Center (ATEC) building

The trustees also accepted a report from the task force on the history of Clemson with multiple recommendations on how to more effectively communicate the university’s full history. Clements was charged with implementation of the recommendations, with the board having final authority over specific proposals.
